NDT Method 02

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) Services in Boksburg

Highly reliable surface defect detection using liquid capillary action. Cost-effective. Applicable to all non-porous materials including stainless steel and aluminum.

What Is Dye Penetrant Testing?

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), also known as Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), is a highly reliable and cost-effective Non-Destructive Testing NDT Boksburg method used to detect surface-breaking defects on non-porous materials. PT is one of the most widely used NDT methods in fabrication workshops across the East Rand due to its simplicity, portability, and universal material applicability.

How Capillary Action Reveals Surface Flaws

The PT process relies on the physical principle of capillary action. A highly visible liquid dye (red visible or fluorescent) is applied to the surface of a thoroughly cleaned and dried component. Over a controlled dwell time (typically 10-30 minutes), the liquid seeps into any microscopic surface-breaking cracks, pores, or laps through capillary pressure.

After the dwell period, the excess surface dye is carefully removed. A white developer powder or spray is then applied, which draws the trapped penetrant back out of the defect through reverse capillary action, creating a bright, high-contrast indication that clearly reveals the location, length, and orientation of the flaw.

Applications for Boksburg & East Rand Industry

Because PT is not reliant on magnetism, it is universally applicable to both ferrous and non-ferrous, non-porous materials, including stainless steel, aluminium, ceramics, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. FlawTech frequently utilizes PT for:

  • Welding Inspection on non-ferrous piping and pressure boundary welds
  • Root pass and final cap inspections on austenitic stainless steel fabrications
  • Post-machining inspection of castings and forgings

Applicable Standards

  • ASME Section V, Article 6 — Liquid Penetrant Examination
  • ASTM E165 — Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing
  • SANS 10120 — Non-Destructive Testing of Welds

Fast, cost-effective dye penetrant inspections for your fabrication projects. ASME compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PT detect internal flaws?

No. PT is exclusively a surface method. It detects only defects that are open to the surface. For internal flaw detection, we recommend Ultrasonic Testing or Radiography.

What materials can be tested with PT?

Any non-porous material, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper alloys, ceramics, and plastics. The material must be non-porous for capillary action to work.

How long does a PT inspection take?

A typical PT inspection cycle takes 45-90 minutes depending on the component size and number of welds. Results are available immediately after developer application.
