Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Services in Boksburg
The fastest and most sensitive method for detecting surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel. Yoke, prod, and coil magnetization techniques.
What Is Magnetic Particle Inspection?
When it comes to finding surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials (carbon steel, low-alloy steel, iron, and nickel), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is the undisputed industry standard. It is a cornerstone of FlawTech's Non-Destructive Testing NDT Boksburg services, offering rapid, highly sensitive defect detection across large surface areas.
How Magnetic Flux Reveals Flaws
The MPI process involves inducing a strong magnetic field into the component using an electromagnetic yoke, prods, or a coil. If there is a surface or near-surface defect (such as a fatigue crack, stress crack, grinding crack, or forging lap), it disrupts the magnetic flow, causing magnetic flux leakage at the defect location.
When we apply fine ferromagnetic particles (either dry powder or wet fluorescent suspension) to the magnetized surface, the particles are immediately drawn to the flux leakage point, accumulating around the crack and creating a highly visible, contrasting indication.
Where FlawTech Deploys MPI
MPI is incredibly sensitive and fast, allowing our technicians to inspect large surface areas quickly. We deploy MPI for:
- Structural steel fabrication inspections in East Rand workshops
- Fatigue crack detection during In-Service Inspections on operational equipment
- Mining Equipment Inspection — checking winder shafts, gears, and crusher frames
- Post-weld surface inspection on carbon steel fabrications
Applicable Standards
- ASME Section V, Article 7 — Magnetic Particle Examination
- ASTM E709 — Standard Guide for Magnetic Particle Testing
- ASTM E1444 — Standard Practice for Magnetic Particle Testing
MPI provides rapid, sensitive surface inspection for your steel components. Deployed from Boksburg across Gauteng.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can MPI detect sub-surface defects?
MPI can detect defects up to approximately 3-5mm below the surface, depending on the magnetization technique and defect orientation.
What materials can be inspected with MPI?
Only ferromagnetic materials — carbon steel, low-alloy steel, iron, and some nickel alloys. For non-magnetic materials (stainless steel, aluminum), we recommend Dye Penetrant Testing.
Is MPI faster than Dye Penetrant Testing?
Yes. MPI provides near-instantaneous results with no dwell time required. A typical MPI inspection is 2-3x faster than PT for the same surface area.
